SOME PEOPLE
Twenty four rolls
of toilet paper,
one log of wood
left for the fire
and if we run out of beer
tonight
I’m going to mix toothpaste
with water
and try to catch a
feeling.
Its just things,
and then nothing
but some people
help make the
time not so
bad.
Like the wog in his
garden and
his dead
wife in a hole.
Or the Quentin inmate
who writes me and says
“Can you stop sending
me letters,
I just want to do my
time in peace.”
Jack Queer who wants
to give me a blow job,
but is always staunched out
by his boy friend.
The last log burns well.
It was thick and strong and
it keeps me warm.
The glass of toothpaste
is a crusty mess
on the light shade
beside me in the morning.
She helps me out of bed,
cleans my glasses and
cooks three sausages
with eggs.
We go shopping
and she buys nothing.
I smoke cigarettes.
Its just things,
and then nothing
but some people
make the time
not so bad
