People in the final stages of hypothermia engage in “paradoxical undressing”. Even though they are dying from the cold, they start to feel incredibly, irrationally hot. They strip off their clothes to cool themselves down. Because they are found naked, they were often thought to be victims of a crime.
Some say that it’s because the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates body temperature, simply stops working properly. Another theory is that the blood vessels on the outer parts of your body relax, leading to a sudden surge of blood to your extremities, which fools you into feeling overheated.
They also engage in terminal burrowing, which occurs often after the paradoxical undressing. Afflicted people will seek out small, enclosed spaces. Exactly why they then squeeze themselves into the tightest, lowest space they can find is still undetermined. (Source)
"Drunk at the matinee" is a collection of candid poetry about stupid shit that we all experience from day to day.
