Claustrophobia is the irrational fear of confined spaces. One person who certainly didn’t suffer from claustrophobia was John Jones, an avid spelunker from Utah, United States.
Nutty Putty Cave is a hydrothermal cave west of Utah Lake. In November of 2006, Jones was exploring the cave when he became stuck in a segment known as “Bob’s Push.” One of his arms was pinned underneath his body and he was head first at a 60-degree angle facing down. At one point during the rescue attempt, Jones was successfully partially freed and was given food and water. When rescuers started the rescue mission once again, the cord supporting Jones failed, causing him to slide 10 feet back down in the crevice.
28 hours into the rescue attempt, Jones died. It was determined that it was too dangerous to attempt to retrieve Jones’ body and in 2009, Nutty Putty Cave was permanently sealed with his body inside.
