A Texas farmer found this astronaut helmet in his field after the Columbia accident. The black structure resembling hair is actually carbon fiber. To those wondering how the astronauts might have felt at the time of the disaster, they were all unconscious within seconds when the cabin suddenly depressurized, and died quick when their restraints failed and their upper bodies were jerked around. When it finally came apart, the heat and speed of the air they hit tore them apart.
