Facing certain execution, Andrei Chikatilo begged for mercy from the prosecutor. “I felt a kind of madness and ungovernability in perverted sexual acts,” he wrote. “I couldn’t control my actions, because from childhood I was unable to realize myself as a real man and a complete human being. Everything I have done makes me shudder.”
By the time of trial in 1992, the Soviet empire had crumbled and Chikatilo had abandoned the remorse tack in favor of feigning madness. The mild-mannered man appeared in court with a shaved head and teeth that appeared to have been filed to points. He locked his face into an unblinking sneer.
