On the 19th of May, 1902, an explosion ripped through Fraterville Coal Mine in Tennessee. The blast instantly killed many of the 216 miners who were underground with 26 surviving the initial blast. However, unable to escape, all of the survivors suffocated to death. Alongside their bodies were letters to loved ones. This letter was written by Jacob Vowell to his wife, Sarah Ellen. The couple had 6 children; sadly their 14-year-old son, Elbert, died alongside Jacob in the mine.
