Dr Beremiz Salazar (@ortopedia_veterinaria),
an orthopaedics specialist in Mexico, has been working on an amazing
case of a toucan with a broken beak this week. The injury was likely
sustained during bird trafficking, and without the tip of the beak the
toucan is unable to eat and would starve to death - so some creativity
and skill was needed to think of a solution. Teamwork
in action, Dr Salazar teamed up with another specialist veterinarian
along with a visual arts professional to create a reconstructed model of
the beak fragment which was then transferred to a 3D printer so a
prosthetic could be printed! It is due to be fitted this week and with a
bit of luck it will be a success, giving the toucan a second chance at
life.
