A Bakeneko is said to be a supernatural cat from Japanese folklore. It is said that they begin life as a regular house cat but once they get older, often around 12 or 13, they begin to develop supernatural powers. Bakeneko are said to then begin to walk on their hind legs like that of a human being. They are also said to speak and understand human language and some are even capable of shape shifting into human form. Some bakeneko are believed to be evil and devour their human masters to take their place. Folklore also says that sometimes their tails can contain magic which can ignite any flammable material that their tail touches and that some bakeneko are even capable of raising zombies. Some superstitious Japanese people were paranoid about bakeneko and would abandon their cats once they get old enough to develop their supernatural powers.
