18-year-old Sarah McKinley from Oklahoma had recently just been made a widow and single mother when her husband sadly passed from cancer on Christmas Day of 2012. The following week a man by the name of Justin Martin arrived at her door, claiming he was a new neighbour wanting to introduce himself. She did not allow him into the house. A few days later, Martin arrived at McKinley’s door once again. This time he was with another man and was carrying a large hunting knife. The two men knocked on the door and, for obvious reasons, McKinley would not allow the men to enter. They began to force their way into her home where McKinley was with her young baby. Fearing for their life, McKinley armed herself with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, hid in the bedroom and called 911. While on the phone, she asked if she was allowed to shoot the intruder to which dispatch replied, “You have to do whatever you can to protect yourself.” She then shot and killed one of the intruders while the other fled. The shooting was ruled justifiable. You can listen to the 911 call here.

"Drunk at the matinee" is a collection of candid poetry about stupid shit that we all experience from day to day.
