Uranium emitting alpha particles. This is basically a small
rock with uranium ore, inside a chamber filled with a cold,
“supersaturated” vapor of water, ethanol or something else, called a
cloud chamber. It takes so little energy to condense parts of the vapor,
that a single, subatomic particle like an alpha- or beta particle can
cause a cascading effect making these big, white stripes in the vapor.
However, these condensates quickly return to thermal equilibrium with
the rest of the chamber, and the stripes vanish.Every time you see a new
stripe, a particle has gone through it. (Source)
Omg, we did this in our Modern Physics class and examined simple particles in the air that happened to pass by! 🤓
