While incarcerated for murdering at least ten women, Edmund Kemper made a number of attempts to end his life. One such attempt took place in October of 1973 when Kemper sharpened a ball point pen and slashed his arms and wrists. He threatened that he would kill any of the guards that attempted to offer assistance. Successfully severing an artery, he lost approximately four pints of blood before guards finally overpowered the 6′9″ giant using chemical gas. “It took four deputies to get the leg irons and handcuffs on him,” said Sgt. Robert Cancilla.
