Actress Sue Lyon, best known for her role in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita (1962) married convicted killer Gary “Cotton” Adamson. They met when she was doing volunteer work for the Federal Public Defender’s Office and was visiting the inmates in the Los Angeles County jail, where Adamson ended up after he escaped from jail in Colorado and fled to California. When he was sent back to Colorado, they kept writing to each other. She visited him two years later and they decided to get married. The ceremony took place in the maximum security prison, with a few friends and family members. She was able to wear a veil and have a bouquet. He was then serving a twenty-to-forty year term.
Her controversial marriage put a strain to her movie career. They divorced a couple years later but she still tried to help him with his defense for years.
