‘What do you have to do to get attention around here - kill somebody?’“- Michael Alig after his arrest.

A regular face of the New York party scene, Michael Alig was no stranger to drama and infamy. However, on March 17th 1996, Michael was a perpetrator in a horrific crime that would later see him imprisoned for 17 years.
Working as a successful club promoter, Alig was heavily involved in the world of recreational drugs. On that fateful night, he and his friend murdered fellow promoter and drug dealer Angel Melendez following an argument over late drug payments. He claims that he was so high on drugs that his memory of the murder is unclear. After killing Melendez, the pair bought a box of kitchen knives from Macy’s and, in exchange for 10 bags of heroin, Michael offered to begin the gruelling task of dismembering the body. The body parts were then thrown into trash bags and disposed of in the Hudson river, along with the murder weapons.
In the weeks following Melendez’s disappearance, Alig allegedly told “anyone who would listen” that he and Riggs had killed him. Most people did not believe Alig and thought his “confession” was a ploy to get attention, as this was not the first time that he had made such a bold statement.
