Japanese death row inmates are not told their date of execution. They wake each day wondering if today may be their last. Death row inmates are kept in a remand prison because the sentence is the execution. The execution room is quite surreal, resembling an under-furnished lounge; the trapdoor for the hanging is even carpeted. There is a small seating area for the prisoner to commune with a (Buddhist) priest before his death.
In the prison cells, the lights are never turned off. The prisoners must sleep on their fronts. If they turn over in their sleep, they are woken up. During the daytime, they are required to sit in one position and must stare at a dot on the wall. If they look somewhere else they are punished. (Source)Geez.

"Drunk at the matinee" is a collection of candid poetry about stupid shit that we all experience from day to day.
