Shown above is one of the numerous notes and letters would-be assassin John Hinckley Jr. slipped under Jodie Foster’s
dorm room door while she attended Yale University. Hinckley became
obsessed with the actress after watching the movie Taxi Driver and began
to stalk her. The note is dated March 6, 1981, just 3 ½ weeks before he
shot President Ronald Reagan. On March 30, 1981, Hinckley shot
and wounded President Reagan and three other men outside of the
Washington Hilton Hotel. When investigators searched Hinckley’s hotel
room they found an unmailed letter to Foster in which he discussed his
plan to attack Reagan and wrote, “I will admit to you that the reason I am going ahead with this attempt now is because I just cannot wait longer to impress you.”
Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a
psychiatric hospital. In 2016, he was deemed fit for release and on
September 10, 2016 he was released under strict conditions.
