Serial killer David Berkowitz sleeps in a cell in Kings County Hospital, 1977.
After
Berkowitz’s arrest a newspaper reporter snuck into the hospital and
took pictures of the notorious killer, who was accused of murdering six
people and injuring seven more in a murder spree that held the entire
city of New York in terror for a year.
Berkowitz claimed he had
been acting under the orders of his next-door neighbors dog when he
committed the crimes, and was promptly institutionalised while he
awaited trial. The reporter who snuck in reported that the killer “ate
heartily and slept like a baby” in his article, which angered the police
as they had been denied access to Berkowitz by his lawyer.
