Enola Gay crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima 1945. Between 135,000 to 300,000 Japanese civilians, mostly children, women and the elderly, were slaughtered in this bombing. The propaganda line at the time was that the bombing was necessary to win the war and save the lives of countless Americans. However the US military was fully aware of the fact that prior to dropping the bomb Japan was preparing to surrender, and there was no military justification for the weapon to be used
“the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.… in being the first to use it, we…adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.” - Admiral William D. Leahy, FDR’s chief of staff.
Instead it is thought that the use of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was designed as a display of strength and a warning to soviet Russia, ensuring that the USA could use the ever present threat of nuclear destruction to establish dominance in the post-war world.
