Three cases of mass murderers using Latin phrases in reference to their attack.

1. Acta Non Verba

On July 8, 1973, Olga Hepnarová penned two letters, each of which foretold her fatal act to come. They differed slightly in speech and one contained a passage completely omitted from the other, but the phrase “Acta, non verba,” its meaning the literal translation of “Actions not words,” concluded paragraphs in both, where she sentences society to death. Two days later, after mailing a letter each to the editorial staff of two local newspapers, Olga fulfilled her declaration, as she plowed into a group of people at a tram station in Prague, Czechoslovakia with a service truck, killing eight of them.

2. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi

Joseph William White was considered a quiet and unassuming presence his entire life, and on September 23, 1970, he committed the unthinkable when he shot to death four female coworkers. His silence remained unchanged, as he stalked through the New York State Department of Labor offices in Albany, leaving a single page suicide note discovered in his pants pocket his only explanation. Its contents weren’t entirely disclosed, but he finalized the note with the phrase “Sic transit gloria mundi,” translating to “Thus passes the glory of the world,” spitefully realizing life’s fleeting nature.

3. Alea Jacta Est + Casus Belli

As he passed through the doors of the École Polytechnique, an engineering school in Montreal, Quebec on December 6, 1989, a three-page handwritten suicide note concluded with the phrase “Alea Jacta Est,” meaning “The die is cast,” stuffed in his jacket pocket, signified Marc Lépine’s life had reached the point of no return. Responsible for his undoing were women he collectively viewed as feminists, who he claimed capitalized on the opportunities of men and this essentially provoked him into action, which was expressed through another Latin phrase, “Casus Belli,” literally translating to “A case of war.” Lépine slaughtered 14 women before delivering the end unto himself.
