Joel Rifkin targeted prostitutes around the state of New York. A lot of the time, he would bludgeon his victims before he strangled them so they would be unconscious and easier to control; A virtually risk-free method that a lot of serial killers use. However, as he grew more confident, he decided to skip the first step and get right down to the choking. A few girls managed to escape his grasp and live to tell the tale. In a television interview, he reminisced on one such moment:

“One girl managed to hook her foot around me and lift me up to the roof of the car. I relaxed, and she relaxed and she says… ‘I gotta quit doing this’. and of course, I was like ‘I should probably quit too’ but the next night I was back out and she was back out doing what we do. We were laughing about it in the end. I decided to let her go.”
