Milroy’s disease
is a
lymphatic disease that causes swelling (lymphedema) in the lower legs
and feet. Lymphedema is usually present at birth, or it can develop
during infancy. It develops on both sides and symptoms will likely
worsen overtime. Other common symptoms include upslanting toenails,
built-up fluid in the scrotum in males, cellulitis, and prominent leg
veins. Most people with Milroy’s disease also have an affected parent,
but in some cases, it’s caused by a genetic mutation.
One very
notable sufferer of this disease was Fanny Mills, otherwise known as
the ‘’Ohio Big Foot Girl’’. Born in Sussex, England, she had two sisters
who were born unaffected by the disease. She profited off her disease
by displaying herself on the freak show circuit, where she became a huge
hit, earning about $150 per week. By the time of her death in 1899,
when she was just 39-years-old, her feet had grown to be 17 inches
long.
