Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental illness in which the person has an exaggerated sense of self-importance, a deep need for admiration and praise, and a lack of empathy for others. Behind their mask of over-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, hence why they react badly to any sort of criticism that comes their way. People with this disorder often come across as callous, arrogant, and pretentious. They tend to monopolize conversations and and are fixated on fantasies of vanity, power, success, and intelligence, believing they are the best and deserve nothing but the best. These individuals lack insight into their own behavior and the way their extreme sense of entitlement impacts those around them. They are easily jealous and threatened by others, and believe others are envious of them. A narcissist will rarely, if ever, apologize for a wrongdoing—they tend to justify anything they do and are incapable of putting themselves in the other person’s shoes. When they don’t receive special treatment and obedience, they may react with anger or impatience. Narcissists project a perfect exterior to the public so as to conceal their true inner feelings of insecurity, shame, and vulnerability. Those with NPD are highly exploitative in relationships and don’t care about the other person’s feelings, wishes, or needs.
